WILW: Made in Abyss
Made in Abyss is one of those shows that I don’t want to end. It’s an anime (a genre which is historically very hit or miss with me) about a city at the edge of a massive sinkhole in the earth (called the Abyss) and the people who descend into said sinkhole in search of treasures (called relics). That’s pretty much it. No world-saving here. Just good, old fashioned adventure...with a healthy dash of personal mystery and one character with a conveniently forgotten past.
The conceit is simple: the sinkhole is so deep that clouds obscure anything past the first level, and subsequent levels grow increasingly dangerous due to a dazzling array of monsters and a mysterious sickness which transforms you into a beast if you descend too deep.
Explorers who descend into the Abyss in pursuit of treasure and glory are ranked by a “whistle” system, with White Whistles being those who travel the deepest into the abyss. These White Whistles are one of the best parts of the show, having lost most of their humanity themselves, and thus end up being as terrifying as they are fascinating.
So far, there’s only one season of Made in Abyss, as well as one movie which acts as a sort of sequel or conclusion to said first season. I don’t know if there are plans to make more seasons, but I absolutely hope there. This is fantasy adventure in its most undiluted. Do not miss it, if you enjoy animations. (It’s beautifully drawn, as well.)
